Search Engine Optimization – Basics

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from the search engines through un-paid (”organic”) search results; as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) or paid traffic. High rankings in the search results pages (SERP’s) tend to receive more qualified visitors from the search engines. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Search Engine Optimization – Major Ranking Factors

Link Popularity. One of the most considered factors search engines look at is incoming links to a page and domain. Search engine algorithyms are highluy dependant on evaluating the backlink structire of websites. Back links are simply links point to your website which live anywhere on the web outside of your domain. Search engines not only evaluate the quantity but the quality and relevance of those back links. Search engines also place a lot of weight on the anchor text of the link as well. By far one of the most difficult challenges of SEO is building quality back links. This not something that can be manipulated very easily and if it is you might find your site getting penalized as a result.

Keyword use in the title tags. <title>Put Keywords Here!</title> Undoubtedly one of the most important on-page SEO factors is the simple title tag, and more importantly, keywords within the title tag. The omission of keywords in title tags of a website can greatly reduce the potential to rank for certain targeted terms. Search engines value the title as the most important meta element of that page.

Keyword use in the first words of the title tag. Placing targeted keywords at the front of the title tag is a good practice. Generally, search engines only index about the first 60-70 characters of the title tag so it’s important to describe the page at hand before it is cut of at the indexing limit.

Keyword use in the domain. Incorporating important keywords in the domain is always a good idea. Domains that are descriptive to the content and purpose of the site are always helpful to users and search engines. Additionally, search engines pick up the keywords in a domain name just like they do in the title of a web page.

Existence of substantive and unique content. It’s cliche, however,  it probably always will remain that “content is king”. The more unique and quality content within you site the better chance you have at setting yourself apart from competition – and outranking them.

Content freshness. It’s important to note that websites with stale content will eventually fall away in the SERP’s. In contrast, websites that continually update and publish new content reap the benefits. The more frequently content is published on a website the more frequently the spiders crawl and index pages within that domain.

Conclusion. Bottom line is search engine optimization takes experience and a lot of effort. There’s no way around it. If you want long lasting high rankings in the search results pages, you can count on working for it.
